A FromSoft movie? It has a nice 'Ring' to it
Hello everyone, and welcome to the latest issue of the Destructoid Changelog. This week, we’re touching on the Elden Ring movie adaptation, as well as rumours of Steam being hacked and the return of DOOM.
Put a ring on it

We’ve arguably never had it better for video game adaptations. The Super Mario Bros Movie and A Minecraft Movie have seen huge box office successes, and The Last of Us and Fallout have been great on the smaller screen (we’re not going to talk about Borderlands, though).
Now, it appears we could be getting an even more ambitious project from A24, with the studio reportedly looking to produce a movie based on From Software’s Elden Ring.
The 2022 action RPG is beloved by many for its difficulty and dark fantasy world, but there’s a deep well of lore to pull from, which was developed between director Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin.
If, like me, you’ve found yourself falling down a proverbial rabbit hole, finding new wrinkles to Elden Ring’s tale of gods, sorcery, and betrayals, then this will be great news to you.
Still, with so much of FromSoft’s magic being the way the studio unfurls its stories through exploration and environmental storytelling, it feels hard to imagine the project doing the world of The Lands Between justice.
With that in mind, we’re hopeful it’ll offer a prequel of sorts, laying out the key motivations of so many of the game’s characters, friend or foe, and helping add context to our ongoing journeys through it.
Vyke’s push to become an Elden Lord, Malenia’s tragic story, and Godrick’s grafting could make it a truly memorable movie, filling in blanks that even many who have finished the game may have missed.
Alex Garland, the director behind Ex Machina, Civil War, and Warfare, is tipped to direct the movie, and it’s also expected to be the most expensive project to come from A24.
Was Steam hacked?

We were a little panicked earlier this week when a LinkedIn post claimed a third party had acquired the personal data of millions of Steam users and was being sold on the dark web.
Naturally, we rushed to update our passwords, but not before reading that the data had reportedly come from a two-factor authentication vendor, not from Valve itself.
Posting an update on Steam, Valve said, "You may have seen reports of leaks of older text messages that had previously been sent to Steam customers. We have examined the leak sample and have determined this was NOT a breach of Steam systems.”
“We’re still digging into the source of the leak, which is compounded by the fact that any SMS messages are unencrypted in transit, and routed through multiple providers on the way to your phone.”
While the company has acknowledged the leak, it has suggested you don’t need to change your passwords and that you should consider setting up the Steam Mobile Authenticator.
Phew!
DOOM is back, and better than ever

It’s not often a series with such an incredible pedigree gets a reboot that works as well as DOOM’s 2016 entry.
For a series so set on reinvention, it was a staggeringly successful change. From its music, to its combat and its revitalised Slayer protagonist, it’s one of the most impressive do-overs of any gaming franchise. While DOOM Eternal left some fans cold due to its increased focus on platforming, we’re pleased to say The Dark Ages, which launched this week, is a very welcome return to form.
A prequel to 2016’s game, The Dark Ages asks more questions of the Slayer, the universe he inhabits, and his role in it. It’s also got a shield he can throw, Captain America style, with a chainsaw attached to it.
A refreshing change of pace for a genre increasingly bogged down with loadouts and loot, The Dark Ages succeeds in making its predecessors look quite tame in comparison.
Finally, this was my last issue of the Destructoid Changelog newsletter, and I really appreciate anyone reading it as I pass it over to another writer.
